The Awarua project was a collaborative effort to develop the most cost-effective solution for bank retention. The chosen design utilised MacMat-R, pinned to the slope with short rock anchors, providing immediate rock-fall stabilisation while allowing grasses and native vegetation to establish through the matting.
This system delivers effective protection while blending naturally into the surrounding environment as vegetation takes hold. The project was completed in four weeks and achieved stability at around one-third of the cost of an equivalent anchored shotcrete wall.
